“I am always drawn to creative people. I naturally gravitate towards them.”
Muki is my excuse to say and do outrageous things!
What’s it like balancing a burgeoning creative career?
It’s really hard! My music manager is always reminding me to make time to work on music, but it is so easy to get swept up in your day. But at the same time, I am constantly writing songs about things that happen to me, so I think that in the end it all balances itself out.
Are you surrounded by creative people?
My father is a musician and my sister is a music producer, so it’s safe to say I grew up in the craziest house. I am always drawn to creative people. I naturally gravitate towards them.
Do you have creative outputs besides music?
Fashion for me is a way to express myself creatively; I am always hunting around for unique pieces particularly for when I’m performing. But I also try and support the Australian fashion industry; my favourite designers right now are Emma Mulholland and Ciara Nolan.
“I am totally distracted by music. I could be having a conversation with someone and a song will come on in the background and I will tune out…”
How does your love of music work its way in to your every day life?
I am totally distracted by music. I could be having a conversation with someone and a song will come on in the background and I will tune out of the conversation and start listening to the production or the lyrics of the song. My friends have learnt to stop talking to me when they notice I tune out.
What kinds of different things can inspire a song?
I think anything that provokes any sort of strong emotion—I feel the need to write a song about it. It’s like therapy for me. There’s a joke amongst musicians that you should never mess with a songwriter…enough said.
It’s been a couple years since your single ‘Wolves’ what have you been working on?
I have written and featured on tracks for various Australian producers, Paces being one of them and that lead me to perform at Splendour 2014. This last year I have been songwriting for my debut EP. I’m really excited about finally releasing my own music.
What can we expect from Muki in 2016?
Probably a lot of dancing, sassy commentaries, synthesizers, and some unusual fashion choices.
